Why I’m Endorsing Elizabeth Warren

Today, I’m thrilled to announce that I’m endorsing Elizabeth Warren for President.

I’ve been following Senator Warren for a long time. When I was a student at Harvard Law School, she was a professor there — although I made the poor choice not to take her class. We live and learn. Despite that bad decision, I admired her tenacity and policy chops from afar. As an unapologetic policy nerd, I’ll just say this: it takes one to know one.

I became even more of a fan upon witnessing her leadership in creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I’ve followed her rise as she won her election to the U.S. Senate in 2012, and I’ve been consistently inspired by her anti-corruption work, her allyship to the LGBTQ community, and her determination to fight income inequality.

Housing

As a State Senator representing San Francisco and northern San Mateo County, housing and homelessness are always top of mind for me and for the people I represent. I strongly believe our next president must make housing a top policy priority.

I’ve dedicated much of my time in the Senate to advancing legislation to address our worsening housing crisis. Evictions are spiking, our homelessness epidemic is growing, and young families are being pushed out of our state. I’ve been working hard on legislation — Senate Bill 50 — to increase our housing supply, and to end restrictive single family zoning that bans apartments and affordable housing. In California alone, we have a 3.5 million housing shortage and rank 49 out of 50 states in homes per capita.

Senator Warren fundamentally understands the reality of our housing mess. In her housing plan, she states, with regard to our housing crisis, the “root caus[e] of the problem [is] a severe lack of affordable housing supply, and state and local land-use rules that needlessly drive up housing costs.”

Policies that address our broken approach to housing and zoning: that’s the kind of big structural change we need in this country. And that’s why I’m proud to be Team Warren.

All in for Warren

We need a president who’s not afraid to put forward ambitious policy proposals and work hard to get them implemented. I believe that, as President, Elizabeth Warren will stand up for all Californians, and all Americans, on issues like housing and LGBTQ rights. I’m proud to support Senator Warren and look forward to seeing her become our first female (and biggest policy nerd) president.
